Inheritance Calculator (Faraid)
Enter the estate and the heirs — each heir's Shariah share appears as an exact fraction and an amount. The calculation follows Hanafi faraid and covers the common heirs: spouse, sons, daughters, father and mother.
Important: this calculator covers only the common heirs listed above. For grandparents, siblings alongside parents or children, grandchildren, a will or disputed debts, do not rely on it — consult a mufti or Dar al-Ifta. The estate is what remains after funeral expenses, debts and any valid bequest.
| Heir | Share | Percent | Per person | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wife / wives | 1/8 | 12.50% | Rs 150,000 | Rs 150,000 |
| Sons | 7/12 | 58.33% | Rs 700,000 | Rs 700,000 |
| Daughters | 7/24 | 29.17% | Rs 350,000 | Rs 350,000 |
Frequently asked questions
How are the shares worked out? Give me an example.+
Take an estate of Rs 1,200,000 left by a husband whose heirs are his wife, one son and one daughter. The wife takes her fixed 1/8 = Rs 150,000. The residue of Rs 1,050,000 goes to the children as 'asaba, the son taking twice the daughter — Rs 700,000 to the son and Rs 350,000 to the daughter. That is the default example loaded in the calculator. (A wife's estate works the same way in reverse: a husband takes 1/4 when there are children, 1/2 when there are none.)
Which heirs does this calculator cover?+
The common core: a husband or wives, sons, daughters, the father and the mother — including the fixed shares, the residuary ('asaba) rules, 'awl (shares exceeding the estate) and radd (residue returning to fixed-share heirs). Grandparents, siblings alongside parents or children, grandchildren and more distant relatives follow further rules and are deliberately not guessed here.
What must be paid before the estate is divided?+
First the funeral expenses, then the deceased's debts, then any valid bequest (wasiyyah) — which cannot exceed one-third and cannot be made to an heir. Only what remains is the estate this calculator divides.
What does 'awl and radd mean in the results?+
'Awl applies when the fixed Quranic shares add up to more than the whole estate — every share is then reduced in the same proportion. Radd is the opposite: a residue remains, there is no residuary heir, so the residue returns to the fixed-share heirs (other than the spouse) in proportion to their shares. The calculator names the rule whenever it uses one.
My family's case is not covered. What should I do?+
Take the question to a mufti or Dar al-Ifta with the full family picture. Inheritance turns on details this form does not ask about — a will, debts, a missing heir, a child in the womb, deaths in the same event — and a wrong division is a serious matter. This calculator is guidance for common cases only.
